New Zealand Farming Pioneer - Edward Elworthy
Edward Elworthy was born in Somersetshire, in England. Whilst owning and
managing sheep farms in Australia he heard of good land for sale in South
Canterbury New Zealand. He sold up and came to Timaru in 1864, buying half
ownership in a 42,000 acre farm at Pareora. By 1872 he had bought out his
partner and was running 46,000 sheep on 82,000 acres, with Holme Station
Homestead the centre of his farming empire. Edward and his wife Sarah had
11 children, four of whom died in infancy. The family lived a privileged
life and the homestead was a social centre of the region, with regular hunts
and balls.
